The main road from Fraserburgh to Inverness passes through Portsoy, a handsome little town, with a spectacular double harbour, one part built in the 17th century, the other in the 19th. The 17th and 18th century buildings adjacent give the area around the harbour particular charm. Portsoy marble, quarried nearby, not strictly marble, but a serpentine, takes a high polish revealing a dark green colouring. The Portsoy Marble Shop occupies part of an old warehouse beside the harbour, and sells an eclectic variety of items, books, minerals, items made from the marble, textiles, the products of the Portsoy Pottery, and much else.
