Fraserburgh: Public architecture

The public buildings are in scale with the prosperity of Fraserburgh at the times they were erected. Saltoun Square is the heart of Fraserburgh, but the prosperity of the late nineteenth century permitted the building of three magnificent buildings, most notable of which is the South Parish kirk, a fantastic exercise in granite-gothic with a tapering conical spire, rose window, completely disconnected from the immediate, local tradition of the kirk as a plain rectangular barn, with a pitched roof and a bell-cote at the peak of a gable. The second, and almost equally exotic is the West Parish Church, with a silhouette like an isoceles triangle with the narrow point towards the sky. The third is the Dalrymple Hall, Scots Baronial public architecture at its boldest, too much for etiolated sensibilities, perhaps, but a supremely confident example of the 'More is more' school of architecture.

Several of the schools exhibit the same flair: for example, it is possible that St Andrew's Primary School might not be the most efficient building for its purpose, but with its crowstepped gables and its stair-tower with fairy-tale turret roof it is a magnficent sight.
